Anything Hugh Can Do, I Can Do Better - Spoilers

Teleplay by: Dawn Prestwich & Nicole Yorkin
Written by: Ellie Herrman
Directed by: Adam Arkin

First aired on FX on May 21, 2007
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dissecting the American Dream?
Hugh is still away and missing when Pancois in complete disarray. Employees are afraid that Hugh just disappeared and that Panco will go belly up. On top of that Hugh called from an unknown location and fired two high level employees.

Encouraged by Dahlia, Wayne seizes the opportunity, signs the Partner Agreement and takes over the operations of the company.

Dale still hangs around Hartley's house, trying to seduce her while offering his gardening services. He sneaks around The Riches house, where he stumbles across Cherien's mother before leaving the premises again.

Di Di and her boyfriend Erick study together and make out. Cael, who has a certain animosity against Erick, makes fun of the two to the point where he upsets Di Di.
As Di Di confronts him for pulling a counting con on a convenient store clerk, he tells her that she is changing and turning into a buffer.

Dahlia also has problems talking to Di Di and understanding her. It seems that Di Di is still hurt and mad at Dahlia for leaving her to take care of the family when she went to prison. After a fallout between the two, Dahlia decides to be patient and give Di Di time to trust her again.

Wayne is finally able to speak to Hugh, but it is unclear where Hugh is (some sort of spa), so Wayne has to go to court, but not before meeting the Plaintiff. Hugh refused to sell a house to a lesbian couple in a Christian neighborhood, in order to keep the real estate prices from plummeting.
Wayne finds out that gays are not especially protected from discrimination and wins the case, much to Dahlia's displeasure. Even Wayne himself has moral problems with the entire situation.

In the end, Dahlia and Wayne use the pool as a "cold river" to cleanse themselves of all the immoralities and wrongs of their new life.

I really liked tonight's episode. It was a little sad really, seeing how the family is changing. Di Di is obviously becoming somewhat distant.
It was heartcrushing to see how Wayne had basically discarded his morals, but I was glad he realized his fault after Dahlia talked to him.
The court scene was hard to watch, it was very blunt, and hard-hitting.
I liked the end with them jumping in the "cold river"
On a lighter note, Hugh's little mid-life-crisis was amusing, as was the Panco employees whining to Wayne.
I was also glad to see a good balance of cast involvement. Overall, a good mix of humour and drama.

Maybe, or maybe she was just the first of the Malloys to become familiar with their new life.

Actually it wasn't the first time. In Reckless Gardening Wayne did a similar thing to the now much hated Ms. Hartley Underwood. I think I can remember one more, but I can't find it right now.
The point is, Wayne always had some trouble with the morals of his job. It wasn't the first time and so far he has always overcome his concerns.

I completely agree with that. It was nice to see the kids being a little more involved and the Paralegal had an appearance too. For my taste it could have used a bit more humor but it was still an overall good episode.

Well, I did like last night's episode:

I was really surprised that Wayne signed the partnership papers, even though it made sense given the circumstances. I really can't believe that Dahlia encouraged him, though.

Dahlia was again "flip-flopping" as Steve put it last time, and Wayne even confronted her about it. But I can completely relate to it. I think she really is trying to make the best out of their staying in Edenfalls, and yet at the same time she has her doubts about and struggles with the buffers' morals. It's really quite interesting: most of society thinks that travellers don't have any morals and yet we see Dahlia, and Wayne for that matter, struggle with the rules and morals of the buffer world, our world...

I also liked the conflict between Dahlia and Wayne regarding the lawsuit. I could relate to both and you could tell that Wayne agreed with Dahlia in principle, yet he still decided that he had to do it. If nothing else, it left him pretty broken in the end.
Honestly, when they both jumped into the pool in the end to "cleanse" themselves, I too felt refreshed and relieved.

But I can't believe they are actually having Hartley Underwood fall for Dale. "I'm gonna be your handyman. I'm gonna come in real handy." C'mon, give me a break.

All in all, another good episode. Wonder how they will end this season.

Oh, I completely forgot. What I liked the most about this episode were the scenes between Dahlia and Di Di. I was wondering when they would touch on that subject again. It was pretty heartbreaking to see both of them struggle so hard.

Another interesting bit, Cael accusing Di Di of having changed and turning into a buffer. Really, if you look at it, they all have changed since they moved to Edenfalls. It is the most obvious with Di Di and Wayne, but really Dahlia has changed and even Sam and Cael changed. I mean, when Dahlia just wanted to up and go to get the whole family cleansed, nobody was ready to go with her. They all had "buffer excuses", even Cael.

I agree, but it seemed like she also just blew Dahlia off everytime she wanted to talk to her. Then again that is normal teenage behavior. Di Di didn't seem that way earlier though.

I think the Dahlia flip-flopping may have to do with the writers different interpretations of her. Then again, I'm basing this on nothing, because I really don't want to research who wrote what episode, and watch out for Dahlia in back episodes :p

Well, unless this episode was written by a bunch of different writers, I don't really agree.
In some scenes she was questioning their buffer life and morality as Dahling pointed out and in other scenes she was pushing Wayne to sign the Papers so they could continue living this life.
Either she has a multiple personality disorder and we are gently lead to where both personalities surface or she is really torn between the two worlds.

I found it interesting that Dahlia and Wayne didn't really care that Di Di admitted to have sex (even though it was not true), but they were upset that she didn't ask for their blessing.

We also found out that Wayne and Dahlia got married at 15 (with the blessing of their families).

Yes, it is strange that she did push him, and that he signed them. I guess Dahlia saw that Panco really needed the firm hand of leadership since Hugh disappeared, and it wasn't going to get any unless Wayne had a real stake in it. But perhaps it's just as simple as they are getting more than a bit used to the wealthy buffer lifestyle, see that golden ring, and want it all now. Or maybe it's a bit of both.

Of course, there's an upcoming legal problem here. If Wayne signed the papers as "Doug Rich", the contract will be automatically null and void should the family's cover ever be blown, and they will end up with nothing, and very likely in jail not only for fraud and impersonation, but suspicion of murder as well.

If Wayne signed his real name on the dotted line, then that would make more sense in the long haul for him and the family. But then Hugh could quickly invalidate the contract for fraud and fire Wayne on the spot, as he so much likes the threaten most every week, and have him sent to the pokey. Or keep him on, admiring his chutzpah.

It's too bad that the writers are taking the easy way out by forging a personal relationship between Dale and The One-Armed Terror of Eden Falls(tm). Going for the "rich and bored younger woman with a useless old husband ready to get knocked off" is just too easy. It would have been better if they'd left it a strictly business, for revenge only partnership, in my opinion. But let's see where they take it. They might have some surprises up their sleeves on this storyline.

(I have yet to see the episode. I knew the plot already just from the previews last episode. I wish they wouldn't tell so much of the story in the previews. Still, I should have stayed away from here till I do get to watch it later today.)
