From today's Hollywood Reporter:
"Langraf also said that no decision has been made as to a third season of "The Riches," which he noted performs better than AMC's "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" and Showtime's "Dexter" but fell 44% in ratings from Season 1 to Season 2.
"We have a much higher bar for threshold for success than Showtime or HBO or AMC," he said. "So one of the things I'm always struggling to balance is, do I stay with something like 'The Riches' that I'm really proud of that has some real strengths and weaknesses, or do I open up the slot?"
Landgraf opened the session by noting that the network first announced its foray into original scripted programming seven years ago, with "The Shield." At that time, there were eight hourlong scripted series airing on basic cable, all of which were critically ignored, he said; this year, he said, there are more than 30, many of which are seeing commercial as well as critical success."
Perhaps Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver getting Emmy noms on Thursday will tip the scales in favor? Here's hoping!

I agree. <spoilers> I think there should be a third season, but I would hope for it to be different from the second season. This season was more serious and suspenseful, while the previous was lighter.
In the second, the characters developed as individuals, and broke away from each other. In this season, Dahlia left Wayne, Cael left home, Didi has finally broken with the traveler traditions, Sam is no longer an innocent child, Grandma was mostly out of it, and Jim is dead. Otherwise, Nana is closer to Dahlia now in conflict, Dale was afraid enough to come to Wayne, Didi and Cael bonded (while singing Irish dirge and parting ways), and I think Sam was supposed to be closer to Wayne now. Otherwise, this was the dissolution of what the first season created. That's great since the characters are far more dynamic now, yet the season was cold and alienating. No one jumped in a cold pool. No lighthearted scams. Death, murder, failure, constant violence, and themes of personal betrayal rather than impersonal fraud. Character narratives were in opposition, fractured, distinct, and secret. One of the problems with the postmodern style is that the viewer becomes as alienated as the characters are made to be.
I think X Spots The Mark went too far the other way, making it a bit silly and unbelievable, but this season didn't have that unity at all. There weren't fun scams this time, the crazy improvisation, and joyous characters (Jim's party doesn't count, he's dead). I think that's where Izzard's greatest talent shows, in acting the fun stuff. The seriousness of the show, and even the darker themes, are excellent (as they were in the original season) and I enjoyed this season, but I had less fun watching. I think the dissolution created a great opportunity for a third season -- how it's resolved (to what degree) and where they go from there.

I am sitting here watching the 1st Season, which I do daily, alternating with the 2nd Season on my desktop, and hoping that the 3rd Season is not far behind. Unfortunately, it is not looking very promising from all of the articles that have been posted. I hope Mr.Landgraf at FX realizes what a wonderful show this is, and brings it back for at least one more season. In a Q&A from Portland, I think, Eddie seemed pretty confident that it was going to happen, but, that was a couple of weeks ago, so let's hope that his positive attitude will hold true and it will be back! Hell, at least long enough to tie up all of the loose ends that are hanging out there![img] [/img]

Yikes ;-). Yeah, I watched the 1st season a bit too much as well when it was on.
How is the feel of the show different between the seasons? My whole rant above was based on that, but I haven't seen the first season in some time.

| It is different. I absolutely LOVE both Seasons, but, I agree that the 2nd was a bit more serious. There is SOOOO much talent to be seen by Eddie and Minnie, that I hope they are just waiting for Minnie to have the baby and then start making the announcements. There were some of the episodes that I didn't enjoy as much as others, but, I AM HOOKED, just the same. There are actually a group of Irish Travelers that live not too far from me, so, that maybe why I am so intrigued by the show, and, well, for Eddie Izzard of course. I absolutely Love Hugh, too, he just says the stuff you know you're not supposed to, but REALLY want to!! I have found "Live at the Ambassadors" and "Sexie" on line, now, tho, so, at least I'm splitting up my "RICHES" time between other Eddie shows! I'm keeping my chin up and my fingers crossed that it's back!!!

I've been thinking (finally). Because of the 7-episode season, the structure of the show could have had to change temporarily. Suddenly they had to carry a full season's plot arc in 7 shows. Each show was burdened by a lot of content.
It felt more like 24, where there was no rest. The Riches has a dark humour to its drama, and because all the drama and plot explanation had to happen, there wasn't much time for the humour. Season 1 had many episodes, and had the luxury of entertaining episodes that didn't have to contribute to the storyline.
I'm not a writer, but I can't see many new opportunities for the Riches in Eden Falls. I think that's why the first season left with the clifhanger to ditch it while taking Nana with them. I think the Malloy family has huge potential though. They can run a million scams, live anywhere in the country, meet anyone. They're regular people with this superpower of improvisation or persuasion.
