This Is Your Brain On Drugs - Spoilers

Written by: Ellen Herman
Directed by: Jeremy Podeswa

First aired on FX on May 14, 2007
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This Episode is the fallout from Episode 9.
While Dahlia is about to flush the drugs Chunky left her, she hesitates and starts to contemplate over the meth. It appears as if she is thinking about one last sniff when Wayne finds her. Wayne is very upset and in the heat of the discussion, blows a large amount of the drug up his nose. Dahlia is immediately worried about an overdose and tells Wayne to stay at home and wait it out, while she goes to work.
At work she finds out that Hugh has entrusted Wayne with the task of seeing that two important clients sign the paperwork for a large scale sale. Dahlia tries to keep the clients busy and get them to sign the paperwork, while Wayne has a complete meltdown.
He tries to find another job, since he doesn't like working for Hugh anymore, after Hugh has revealed himself in the last episode.
Wayne isn't able to find a job, which might very well be attributed to his current state of mind and to his incoherent manner and phone calls. When he finally thinks he scored an interview for a job, he finds out that the managing partner at that firm is the lawyer he fired for Hugh on his first day at Panco.
At this point he is starting to panic and decides to cut down his monthly bills of over $14,000 (or $19,000 before tax). He decides to pick up Cherien's mom from the elderly care, who obviously has become addicted to caffeine.
She is a sweet old lady who, fortunately for Wayne, is senile enough not to remember how her son in law looks like.
They both decide to visit Cherien (Dahlia) at work, who is still struggling with the clients.
Wayne busts in, makes a scene with the secretary and disappears in his office.
Meanwhile Dahlia, who wants to drive her fake Mother back to the elderly care takes a pit stop at home, since the old lady has to go to the bathroom. They stay at home, while Wayne wanders off to the church for a confession.
He tells the priest everything. The priest however is in an existential crisis himself, having lost faith in God. They both end up in a bar getting completely and utterly wasted.
Meanwhile Dale shows up again. He has been stalking out the Malloys for the entire day and knocks on one of their neighbor's door, introducing himself as a painter who gives excellent deals.
Incidentally he ends up at the doorstep of the lady from Episode 6 (Reckless Gardening), who Doug (Wayne) pressured into dropping her lawsuit against Panco. She and Dale quickly find out that both hate Doug.

This episode ends with Wayne getting picked up by Dahlia from the bar. It appears that each of them can now understand the other's worries in dealing with an addict and the addiction better then before.

Wasn't too impressed with the episode, but I did think Cherien's Mom was fun. After seeing Dale in this episode, I'm shocked that the previews for next week don't imply a Dale-attacks-Wayne oriented episode.

I agree with you Matty. This episode wasn't the best. It was interesting but not as much fun as previous episodes.
Wayne and the Pastor ending up in a bar getting drunk together was pretty funny though. Laughing

On a side note, it appears I was wrong all along and Dale got their location from Ken. I would have thought Ken would keep it at all cost.
Or did he blackmail Ginni?
It would be interesting to find out how he found them.
I am not quite sure why they didn't dedicate a small portion of the episode to this.

I don't know, I actually quite liked it. To be sure, it was different from the episodes we've seen so far, strange even in a way, but I guess that's what I liked about it.

I thought Wayne's storyline was very well written and played, kudos to Eddie, he was brilliant. I think they kind of tried to give the viewer a sense of how Wayne was feeling while he was on drugs. You felt like you were in a rush, everything felt weird, fast-moving, and screwed up.
It was interesting to see how Dahlia and Wayne each dealt with the drug issue being on the other side for once. Dahlia all worried and feeling the angst and anger that Wayne had to deal with when he found out that Dahlia was using. And Wayne having to deal with the effects of the drug; he even said to Dahlia, "Is this how you felt...I am sorry" or something similar.

I totally liked Dahlia's bluntness about her issues, when she talked to the two clients and I thought it was too funny and disturbing at the same time when one of the guys broke down and started sharing his own experiences.

This episode also again questioned "our" way of life. Working, working, and working - for what? Very telling when Wayne said, "I don't even remember what I was supposed to want."

All in all a good episode. It had a few funny parts, but mostly it was quite disturbing to watch Wayne and it was another one of the thought provoking kind.

JMHO. Cool

Dale's story was actually the only part I didn't care too much about. But I agree with Steve, they should have included a short scene about how he found out where to find them. On the other hand, it was a nice twist to find him sitting in front of the house all of a sudden, without further explanation...

Why, you must be so proud of yourself, logging on in the early morning before most people start to read this forum, and slipping in a post with language that you know bloody well is bound to be offensive to some of the forum's readers. Does that make you feel all big and grown up now?

This makes administrating the forum fun. How many combinations of word filters do I need to set up?
C'mon man, it's not necessary to write messages in this style.
I am glad you enjoyed the episode, but please help us make the board enjoyable for all ages too.

I finally got to see this episode last night (via iTunes). An interesting episode, definitely not their best, kind of scattered which is more true to real life, but I think it makes it harder to pull together as a hour-long show.

Anyway, it's so convenient that Hugh was out of town so that Wayne could go off on his bender, and Dahlia could do her thing at the office and with the mother in law Wayne liberated from the nursing home.

A lot of loose ends, one with the REIT guys; this is bound to cause future havoc with Hugh.

Bringing the mother-in-law in will make an intriguing plot twist, since she is aware enough to realize that this is not her family, but accepts it anyway because Dahlia's not a witch like her real daughter, and she has instant grandkids too, who accept and seem to like her.

Dale was creepy as usual, especially in his detailed logging of the "Riches" comings and goings, and now his future alliance with the one-armed terror of Eden Falls! It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. I hope the alliance is platonic, though. I just don't see how realistically she would endanger her life by messing 'round with Dale. So far it seems like she's merely seeing an opportunity for revenge, but if she falls for the bad-boy image, who knows where that will lead? Maybe Dale moving in behind Wayne, and becoming not-so-chummy neighbors?

Ick.

Now that you mention it. I guess Hugh had to get off his recent trip somehow. Maybe he went away to sober out a bit. It was convenient for Wayne, no doubt.

At least the one guy seemed to be very sympathetic with Dahlia. Hopefully that will help somehow save the situation

I believe the exact word she used was Wink :
Code:
preg_replace('/w/i', 'b', 'witch')

She was smiling all the time and seemed to be happy to get out of that hospital on her little field trip.
It would be relatively easy to discredit her though. I don't believe she will be a major thread.

Interesting. I got the same feeling. It looked as if Dale was coming on to her and if she enjoyed the attention.
Seeing her husband finally revealed what kind of person she really is. I still cannot believe she gave up her lawsuit that easily, considering that she had a good case (regardless of her kleptomania).

BTW: Her name is Hartley Underwood and she is the homeowners association lady who had their RV towed in an earlier episode.

As usual, Dale is just after some money. I don't think he has any interest in her, but I think she is naive (going back to how easily she gave up on the lawsuit) and that she will easily fall victim again.
I cannot help but feel a bit sorry for her.

I might be wrong here, but maybe that was the intention. It was a rushed and crazy day for both Wayne and Dahlia, they both were kind of on a trip, though in different ways. So maybe the way the episode was shot and edited/cut was to give the viewer a similar feeling of being lost and on the edge. Though, I might give them too much credit here, who knows. For me, it's what made the episode interesting and different.

Well, given the fact how the last episode ended with Hugh being totally out of it and rolling around on the floor, it made sense to me that he disappeared to do...whatever.

Oh, I hope so too. I can't stand this cliché where the "rich woman" falls for the poor and simple handyman. An alliance between Dale and the one-armed terror of Eden Falls (TM goes to thor) to seek revenge I could deal with, but beyond that...let's hope they don't go there. Confused

I found the drug thing uncomfortable. I'm not much for comedy that's embarrassing to watch. However, this was I think the most directly comedic episode. Izzard gets to go crazy, Driver gets to do some sarcastic humour, and Grandma gets a lot of lines. Not only that, the drug thing leads to some surprisingly dramatic moments (eg. the bar, the office). In my quotes thread, a dozen come from this episode, where some episodes don't get any mention yet.

Well, I did like it a lot. It was a very funny episode and I especially liked how Wayne and Dahlia each got a taste of the other persons worries and problems.
It was an episode very well done.
