Friday Night Lights - Spoilers

Written by: Ellie Herman, Dmitry Lipkin
Directed by: Guy Ferland

First aired on FX on March 25, 2008

______________________________________________

This episode starts with the trigger-happy Texan holding a gun to Cael's head as they all try to steal his van. In typical Lone Star manner, he takes charge of the situation and holds the Malloys hostage in his apartment. We soon learn that the cowboy is a mentally deranged individual with more problems than the Waco Boy in Washington. He is getting calls from collection agencies and seems to be losing his cool any second. All attempts by Dahlia and the kids to reason with him only seem to push him further and make him angrier.

As the wife of Mr. Cowboy arrives, she gets the shock of her life. But as soon as he is able to convince her that he has captured some travellers, she seems content with the situation. Mr. and Mrs. Cowboy blame travellers for their misfortune and are out for revenge. Too bad Cael picked the wrong car to steal.

Finally, Dahlia's power of persuasion gets through the Texan's skull and ego. Appealing to his sense of greed, they are able to strike a deal with them. Leaving Nina behind as a hostage, Dahlia and the kids have until 7pm of the same day, to come up with $7,000 in order to save Nina’s life. Therefore, they set out to con some buffers for $7,000 at the local football game.

Meanwhile Wayne and Dale drop off Hugh and set out to dispose of Pete’s body. After dropping by at Panco, to pick up Pete’s car, they head for the graveyard to bury the body in another person’s grave. While they are digging the grave, Wayne gets many opportunities to strike down Dale with his shovel, but it never occurs to him to dispose of Dale at the same time.

Left with the southwestern Yahoos, Nina pulls out some dope and starts puffing away, amazing them with her coolness. Another scene later, and everyone in the room is happily sucking on a joint and laughing. Nina tells stories about her gay husband and suddenly a strange group erotic feeling comes over the group. The weird cowboy couple disappears in the bedroom, leaving their hostage unattended. Nina does the only sensible thing, leaving the morons to **** whatever is left of their brains out.

Dahlia and the kids came up with a nice con, involving a local hero football player. Sam poses as a cancer patient and Dahlia, Cael and DiDi collect money for fake raffle tickets. As a price, they offer a brand new Cadillac Escalade. The Escalade was just “borrowed” from a spectator. Unfortunately, some people confront them and the plot is uncovered. The situation quickly escalates with a rampaging mob (did I mention we are in Texas?) threatening to kill Cael …

… suddenly Wayne shows up with the RV. He quickly grasps the seriousness of the situation and is able to pose as an FBI agent “taking over” and bringing in the con artists. He puts his family in the RV and heads for Mexico as planned. Somehow, however, he manages to make his family question the decision to go to Mexico and drops the bomb of Hugh’s multi million-dollar deal. It does not take much convincing and everyone except Cael is ready to go back and re-claim their life as the Riches. Wayne lies about Pete, and claims he paid him off to be silent.

I think Cael was actually convinced too, although it took a little longer.
I wonder how Nina will be able to fit back into the Eden Falls community.

I'm not so sure that Cael was convinced rather than simply intrigued by the complexity of the "upcoming con". It's finally something he can work with - stick around pretending to be the Riches until the land deal goes through, collect the money, and run. It's the angle he's been looking for.

One thing I really liked about tonight's episode was that for the first time they all felt like a family to me when they were all back together in the RV.

So any guesses on who Dale was talking to in the prison?

Well, this is my favorite episode this season ... so far.

I also really like the tone they seem to have found: even though it is darker in general, it seems the actors are very comfortable with each other and their characters. And it definitely translates onto the screen, e.g. feeling more like a family. Hopefully, the show gets renewed, because it's just starting to get really good!!

Yeah, I know what you mean. It seems like they are so comfortable in the RV, it seems like when they are on the road they are just a simple loving family, albeit, one that rips people off to live. But when they are the Riches in Eden Falls they put so much thought into keeping up the lie, only to, as Cael would put it, lose their souls, and drift apart. It seems like when living in Eden Falls, the family hardly know each other anymore.

Good point, Matty, I completely agree with you. We never really got to see them in their element (the RV) other than in the beginning when we hardly knew them at all. They all seemed comfortable and happy, for lack of a better word, and so much more real. Now I can tell how much they are actually pretending and trying to be someone else when they are the Riches. Except maybe Sam, who seems to fit into both worlds quite well, which is ironic given that most would consider him the outsider.

Well, Wayne seems to be in his element in Eden Falls. I can clearly see that he enjoys the scale of this con much more and he really fits in.
He clearly has what it takes to make it in corporate America.
I am not sure about the kids, but Sam also seems to like his Edenfalls life a lot. Didi was too easily persuaded by Cael that she would forget her boyfriend, so I am not sure about her anymore.
Dahlia doesn't seem to have a plan and just follows the flow and Cael is just a rebel who does what he likes the most. Fitting in is not one of these things, thats why he hates Eden Falls. I don't think he has a soul to begin with, so he can't lose it either.

I think that's a little harsh, I mean, he is kind of an {unfriendly word}, and has a little moral..or maybe more of a confusing moral compass, but I think he really loves his family, and that is what is most important to him.

During the burial of Pete Mintzy, Dale was complaining about his hands being all blistered. Wayne responded something to the lines of "they can get infected and you can die". That made me think maybe they found a way to kill off Dale, as he is quite the nuisance. As Dale was washing his hands off Wayne was able to escape and go help his family, which made me think that the blisters were in the story to give Wayne a clean getaway without a confrontation with Dale. Wayne had the blisters as well, introduced when he was washing his hands in the RV. I was hoping they would explain it a little more by the end of the show, but no luck 8(

I think you are right. In Episode 203 he surprised me when he took the fall to protect the innocent boy from punishment. I wouldn't have figured him for that kind of person.
Cael has principles and sticks to them, no matter what anyone thinks of him.
