I really like the direction the creators are taking with Cael for season 2. I feel like he is really the only character from the family that still acts like a traveler. I hope that he continues to keep this static mindset, rather than confroming to what his father wants for him.

I agree, Im even more in love with Caels character now that he is the only true traveler left of the malloy family. this past episode was awesome, in the sense of Cael's character. I agree with everything that he said to his father. I can definately see this developing into something deeper.

Cael_Tammyfan, I can't find where you said it but I hope Cael DOESN'T get back with Tammy and I don't think we will see him with a new love interest anytime soon. Not out of any anti-Tammy sentiment, just ... Cael is too much of a Traveler to hook up with a buffer ... and if he gets back together with Tammy we REALLY wont see more of him! Remember how Ginny's brother moved in with them because he was going to marry DiDi? If Cael gets back together with Tammy he will have to go apprentice to HER father before too long (they get married young and he is around the age) and then NO MORE CAEL ON THE SHOW! Crying or Very sad

well it seems to be going toward Cael being even MORE resolutely a Traveler ... wasn't it in a teaser that

POSSIBLE SPOILER

Cael starts camping out on the lawn again because he feels like the House is stealing their Traveler Souls?

I just watched the episode where Cael leaves the family because he thinks the house is stealing
there soul, you can kinda understand where he's
coming from. His whole life he has lived the
travelors life, (no rules) then your whole care-
free life is changed in one day. The people he
hates the most (buffers) is kinda what he and
the rest of the Malloys have to be to have the
american dream. I don't think any other actor
that i've seen could play this part better than
he can. I think he is very talented and portrays
that character better than all the other characters.
He really makes you belive he is a travelor.

Yes, Noel Fisher is a VERY good young actor. Easy to see why he was nominated for two Gemini Awards (Canadian Equivalent of Emmy Awards)

Cael is the one Malloy who has never deviated from his beliefs. Sure, some of it is just normal teenager rebelliousness, but he's old enough to make some decisions, and it's really hard to find any fault with what he's done. He's been raised to take what he can get and just live wild and free. Part of that must include disdain for buffers, which by extension includes everything they stand for: the accumulation of wealth and possessions, the importance of status over real worth, all that.

And then, in a flash of <whatever>, Dad asks him to become a buffer. Place a value on things he's been told all his life don't really matter. Get along with folks he's been taught are nothing more than potential marks. Fit in and don't cause trouble, when he's been a free bird all his life.

Being wealthy brings a different kind of power, and with it a different kind of freedom, but at a price Cael is not willing to pay, so he rejects it. You gotta admire that.

The only thing I have to say to that is when Cael is making his "Stuff" speech to Rosaleen in the RV I kept thinking, SURE "Buffer" life is about getting STUFF and money ... but so is Traveler life. If traveler life is so free of materialistic intent why bother to steal anything at all? Why does everyone who knows about it want in on the Malloys' $150/$13 mill. deal? I don't think this shows an inconsistency with in Cael's character, just that Cael is naive and young still. He still thinks things like stuff, money and power DON'T actually matter to Travelers when it seems (from looking at the fully grown adult Travelers) that the idea that those things don't matter stems more from their inability to GET lots of stuff, money, power not because of a lack of desire for it.

Oh definitely. I allowed for that in my explanation of Cael's attitude, just didn't want to get into it too much.

I figure Traveller parents know that they don't have a lot to give their kids, so they raise their kids with a mentality that "stuff" doesn't matter, mostly so they can all feel better about their situation. This is where Cael is. The cons, outright stealing, and singing on street corners is just so they can eat. I don't see it as money and property for their own sake. Eventually, though, most people start noticing that it does feel good having nice "stuff".

So while some Traveller adults may actually have their sights set a little higher, Cael isn't there yet. When the Riches died, Wayne saw an opportunity to "steal the American dream", something Cael never wanted in the first place. This is the source of the basic rift between them.

Oh yeah! I wasn't knocking you or your take ... I was just trying to say I appreciate the writing. I am sorry, esp. after rereading I can see how I was unclear. While both DiDi and Cael were forced into more adult roles when Dahlia went to prison during the course of the show we SEE Cael more in an adult role ... we really mostly hear about DiDi being "Mom" to everyone. Cael will steal us a car, Cael will research marks, Cael will crack the Riches' laptop, heck! Cael was the one that grabbed the wheel from Wayne back in episode 1 that made it so that just the Riches were run off the road instead of a head-on collision between Mick and the Riches and/or Mick REALLY side swiping the Malloys' RV.

Now, after more time with all of the characters we see that despite the fact he has always (during the course of the show) had a more adult role in the family, he is still very much a kid. He has clung to the values he was taught as a child and isn't adult enough to understand that the values you are taught are not always the same as the values that are held highest. His beliefs and their conflict with the beliefs/actions of his parents, Dale, and Eamon show us a couple of important things. 1. as I keep repeating Cael is an idealistic kid, no matter how adult he may seem at points. 2. The Malloys are actually NOT deviating that far from their Traveler beliefs or values, despite their time in Edenfalls.

All of this is a long winded way of saying Cael is a great, well written character and this show is AWESOME! Very Happy
