The Big Floss - Spoilers

Written by: Lydia Woodward
Directed by: Brian Kirk

First aired on FX on April 9, 2007
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today's episode was a real shocker. I would have called it Lessons for Life (or something similar).

The episode starts off with Wayne (as Doug) preparing for a meeting with the lawyers of the homeowners conned by Hugh. In the actual meeting, Wayne gets into a legal argument with the lawyers and loses.
As he loses, he pulls a sleeper (The lamest excuse of all - according to Cael). He pretends to be sick and to have fallen asleep in the middle of the meeting. Seems like Wayne's traveller skills are rubbing off from having lived as a buffer for so long already (I speculated about this in the review for episode 2).
Even Hugh has some trouble believing this scam and puts Doug (Wayne) on probation.
Hugh also offered a job to Dahlia, after she showed up in the office (and argued with Wayne about her boring life). She refuses (for now).
Meanwhile, Dahlia, bored being a housewife decides to go for the dentist appointment that Cherien had.
It turns out, the appointment was actually a job interview and everyone was excited about her credentials.
Dahlias first day as a Dental Hygienist is a big success. Even though the dentist can see right through her charade and calls her for not being a Dental Hygienist, he likes her as a person and decides to give her a chance. But then he breaks into tears and we learn that he just lost his wife.

Wayne (Doug) has nightmares and insomnia from all the work and wakes up on his lawn. A friendly neighbor tells him about his teaching job at Deansborough University and how "The Students don't mind asking questions and giving answers."
Wayne gets an idea and gets a job as a teacher (unbelievably, it happens withing the same day !?).
He makes a question and answer game from his case and gets all the answers he needs from his students. Together with these answers and the excellent work of his smart paralegal, he is able to crush the lawyers of the homeowners. Riding on top of his wave of success he even calls Hugh (his boss) an a$$hole in front of everyone and gets away with it.

When Dahlia shows up for work the next day, the Police is all over the place. In his grief, the friendly Dentist gave himself an overdose of medication. Dahlia is crushed.
The Dentist always gave his wife excuses why he had to work so much until it was too late and Dahlia starts seeing parallels to her own life (Wayne works all the time). She thus decides to go to Panco and ask Hugh to give her the job he offered her earlier. Wayne intercepts her and objects, but Dahlia finally gets through to him.

Meanwhile, we find out who drank all of Wayne's beer (he accused his children who strongly objected).
Ginny Dannegan, a pregnant traveller tramp, discovered their whereabouts.
When Cael met with Tammy in Episode 2 he was able to shake Dale in Episode 3 but not her.
She busts into Wayne and Dahlia's life and makes a deal with them (or she would tell Dale where they are).
While the family eats dinner together with Di Di's new boyfriend, the door rings.
Dahlia and Wayne stiffen up and one can really sense that the air is burning between them. Dahlia holds Di Di's hand who is confused when Wayne opens the door and Ken walks in. Ken is Ginny's somewhat mentally challenged brother who introduces himself as Di Di's fiance. It becomes apparent that this was the deal that Wayne and Dahlia had to make in order to silence Ginny.

What are the lessons for life:
-We work all the time until it is too late. It takes a bunch of gypsies looking at our lives from a different perspective to realize.
-Your past will always catch up with you.

I am not sure if just being pissed would be all I'd be. The arranged marriage between Ken and Di Di was one of the main reasons the Malloys chose to run away from the clan.
I don't understand how they can do this to their daughter, no matter what the price.
They gave up one life for her already, why not another one?

OMG - I can't believe they really did this! Shocked What were they thinking? I mean, is all of this really worth that much of a sacrifice? It seems very unfair to Di Di. I can't even imagine being in her position. I only hope Wayne has something planned to turn this around.

Today's ep started off funny and light and upbeat. I was actually lulled into believing that they had found a way to settle in. Until it all came crushing down. And what a twist at the end. I honestly didn't see that coming. Confused

And did you see the preview for next week? This show is really picking up!

Anyone know by any chance what the song at the end of this episode is and who it's by? I really liked it.

And I am really pissed at Wayne and Dahlia for doing that to Di Di. It was all Cael's fault though! I'm also really sad at the direction where Wayne and Dahlia's marriage is going especially now that Dahlia might work for that creep Hugh Panetta.

Hi hernang3! Funny you should ask because someone else was wondering the same thing and then found the song. Here is a link to all the info: music played in episode 4.

Hmm, I could have sworn they were going to show all the episodes during the marathon. Sad

Unfortunately, it looks like 'The Big Floss' is not available for download on amazon at the moment, unless it's just a mix up of episode names. (Check this thread for updates on that issue)

But it is available on iTunes for the same price. Hope you enjoy it.

Edit: Just saw that you already posted in the other thread. Hopefully, SamanthaHally will be able to tell us more soon. Smile

I thought the same, but something else bothers me about this episode even more. Perhaps the writers will address this later on in the season, but for now:

How and why did Wayne and Dahlia fall so easily for, and capitulate so fully to, Ginny's crude extortion? Between being fellow Travellers and therefore "schooled" in thievery and other facets of crime, and knowing what Ginny is like, they would just have to realize that Ginny won't be able to keep her mouth shut even if they do keep their end of the bargain.

Add this to the fact that they know that the son has already blown their cover with at least one other back in camp and an especially dense one in their house (for now), and you know that this house of cards just has to come crashing down sooner or later.

If I were Wayne, I'd have gone ahead and made the deal with Ginny just to get her out of the house, then grabbed everything of value that they could carry and run like hell.

Of course, the previews do show them going back to the camp for Daddy's funeral, so I guess this inconsistency won't matter much. The more interesting storyline will then be how to uncover the murder and deal with Dale's treachery and crude attempt to take over as head of this group of Travellers despite Daddy's wishes otherwise.

By the way, I love the show. I merely have a few criticisms with it that just don't quite add up yet. Otherwise, I think that it's really quite an original and brilliantly written first season, as compared to some other first year efforts.

Very good points thor. I was also somewhat surprised about how "easy" Di Di took the whole thing in the next Episode. I was fully expecting her to make a lot of trouble or run away.

Since Wayne kept saying he would take care of it, I think he simply made the deal, so he wouldn't have to worry about it while he dealt with a big case at work.

I got this feeling since he even tried to keep Dahlia away from work so he wouldn't be disturbed and he kept studying at home to be prepared for his case.
So he made his promises to keep things going until he could deal with them.

Now with the death of Dales father everything will be changed and Wayne won't be able to take care of the situation.

I think Wayne might be fully aware that Ginny is gonna blow their cover and he might be willing to settle things between him and Dale (at least the previews suggest this). I am not sure how Dale is gonna react.

Great post, thor. I agree, there are certain aspects that bother me as well, and the one you mention doesn't quite make sense to me either.
I mean, okay so they gave it a shot at taking over the Riches' lives, but I don't see how it could be worth screwing up your daughter's life. I think your solution makes more sense.
On the other hand, it does seem as if this con is not just "another con" for Wayne. It's almost as if he wants to make it work, no matter the cost.
And I am hoping that there is more to it and that Wayne does actually have a plan, because judging from the previews for Monday, things are going to get much worse for Di Di. Confused

I get the feeling that Wayne's just doing very short-sighted damage control, stomping out one fire at a time and then forgetting about it till it rears its ugly head once again. Nothing ever gets permanently fixed that way.

But then that makes him an ideal employee for Hugh. Who else would bear to live under the constant threat that your job is in danger unless you do the impossible, week after week?
