Sam is the baby of the family and had a hard time living without his mom for two years. Now, that his mom is back home, he is very attached to her. He also loves to wear his sister’s old dresses, causing the neighbors to think that the Malloys have two girls.

| I love Sam, he is a very adorable character, it was pretty brave for the producers to have twelve(?) year old transvestite.

Well I saw he was pretending to be a girl in the first episode, but he loves to wear the dresses?

| Yeah, he was wearing a dress in the first episode, and he's been mostly wearing girls clothes in the other episoes so far.

Interestingly enough, perhaps Sam penchant for cross-dressing is a creative reflection of Izzard's own tendency for wearing women's clothing.
That being said, I am impressed on how capable a child Sam is given his age.

I just read an article about Sam's cross-dressing at advocate.com. Interesting article about TV characters with gender identity issues.
Anyway, as to Jagger27's comment, Eddie said that the decision to have Sam be a cross-dresser had already been made before he even came on board.
| Quote: | | “It had nothing to do with me,” Izzard said of Sam’s cross-dressing. “I just pitched, 'Maybe he should have my exact same characteristics because I know how it works.' I’m basically playing my dad’s reactions to everything I would have done if I were Sam, and what I would have wanted to wear when I was that kid at that age.” |
Eddie also said that he is not influencing Aidan's performance, but he "got him to practice his lipstick.”

| I don't know but Sam has a certain stare. Reminds me a lot of Steven Kings "Children of the Corn". Somehow I think he is freaky and the x-dressing doesn't really do much to lessen this impression I got from him.

| Ive read like a million times that the "Sam wears girls clothes" thing was already in place before Eddie was involved. By the way, crossdressing is not freaky xp

Huh. Thats not what I meant to say. Sorry if I hurt anyones feelings. No x-dressing is not freaky, I meant the boy somehow freaks me out since he reminds me of these develish innocent looking boys from that King movie. I can't explain it or give you any reason for it. Its just this gut feeling I have.
I guess what I really meant was: Him dressing like a girl does nothing to lessen this threatening feeling.

I think he is cute
I loved his performance in the last episode (Operation Education). It was excellent.
I wonder though. Didn't Dahlia make him chose an identity for school? Wonder if he can stick with just boy's clothing or if there will be a lot of confusion

Once someone sees him as a boy or a girl he kinda has to stick with what they saw, I think it would be wierd down the road if they stayed there for a long time and he went through pubery while he was in that school if everyone thought he was a girl.

I watched Eddie being interviewed on Ellen a week or two ago, and he did say he created Sam's character as himself as a kid. I think Sam is a great character in the show, he brings innocence into the picture, where none of the characters really have that at all.
