Cinderella - Spoilers
Story by: Dmitry Lipkin
Teleplay by: Colette Burson
Directed by: Matt Shakman
First aired on FX on May 7, 2007
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
This Episodes starts out with Hugh being thankful to Doug for saving his business. Wayne (Doug) is not happy about a cold handshake and being made "Employee of the Month" and asks Hugh to make him partner.
Hugh responds and invites himself for a dinner at The Riches, wanting to see what makes the man (Doug). It is necessary to evaluate Doug for partner material.
Dahlia drives to the store to stock up on liquor (nothing tells more about a men then the liquor he drinks - according to Hugh). There she meets her old "celly" Chunky K. Chunky was Dahlias best friend who protected her in prison. She is a heavyweight simple minded women, who currently has a stroke of bad luck. So Dahlia decides to take her in, much to the displeasure of Wayne.
The next day, Chunky helps Dahlia to clean the house. As Wayne gets home and finds her still roaming around the house, he is starting to get nervous. He calls her a Taxi and as he catches her sniffing glue, he tries to bribe her to stay away from the family.
Chunky is offended by Wayne's offer and Dahlia gets upset at Wayne for wanting to push Chunky out of their lives again. Dahlia decides to give Chunky a job as their maid instead. She also makes the mistake telling her about Hugh's previous addictions.
At the dinner table, Sam shows up in girls clothing, confusing Hugh. Fortunately Nina (the friendly neighbor) comes to their help, proclaiming that Sam has to go to a school play.
During the party, Hugh manages to trample everyone's feelings with his feet in his usual manner. He makes fun of Chunky (Wayne gave her the "official" name of Cicatrice, French for scar) who loses her temper during the meal. In an outburst she calls poor Jim gay. Nina loses her cool and springs for the bottle, while Chunky quits her job and goes upstairs. Hugh drops his tablecloth and excuses himself for the restroom, going upstairs also.
A short while later, Wayne and Dahlia decide to go and talk to Chunky, when they find Hugh snorting drugs off Chunky's huge chest. From then on Hugh is completely out of it. He offers Wayne instant partnership (ready to sign) and continues to insult Jim, who leaves.
As Dahlia asks Chunky why she gave drugs to Hugh, she responds he deserved it. Dahlia decides to fire Chunky, feeling betrayed by her. Chunky demands a pay off and Dahlia pays her $2,000. In return Chunky tries to get Dahlia hooked on drugs again, but fortunately she refuses to take any. On her way out, Wayne catches Chunky stealing from Hugh. He lets it go and replaces the money afterwards.
The episode ends with Hugh still being completely out of it, rolling on the floor of the house. Wayne still hasn't signed the partnership agreement, feeling somewhat uneasy about Hugh's behavior.
Dahlia sums up the evening with "We are turning into buffers, baby. Ain't we?!"

Dahlia seems to be flip flopping on this a lot. She also reminded Wayne that they are still travellers at heart and that they should share their fortune with the less fortunate and that they should not put a wall around themselves like buffers do.

Yeah this was better than last week, which means it was two times better than a fortnight ago.
I liked this episode because it had no traveller camp s**t in it. They need to ****ing SCRUB that mural off the god damn wall for christ's god damn sake.

Yeah, I noticed that too. There was another scene where Dahlia talks to Chunky about her being the maid and Chunky says all the other rich people have maids and Dahlia replies that she doesn't care, she doesn't want to be one of them.
But I don't know if I would look at it as flip flopping. It looks more like an inner struggle to me.
I think Dahlia does not want to be a buffer per se. And I think she really tries to avoid becoming one.
Then at the end, she started to realize that they are becoming buffers, no matter how hard she fights it.
If that makes any sense?

I agree, it was a great episode, there was some good stuff in it. I just love those "roller coaster" episodes, where it keeps going back and forth between humor and drama; those are the best.

Well, it is a part of the show, so it will be back sooner or later.
Actually, that reminds me: last night while watching the episode I started to wonder what happened to Ken (and Dale). Last thing we know was Dale beating up Ken and that's where they left us hanging. We haven't seen or heard anything since then...but I am sure Dale will pop up again before the season is over.

Agreed!
I loved the stuff with Sam and Nina, it was so good to see Nina. I just really like her character. Loved the little scene with her and Wayne - "I don't care if he's gay" "Well, you're not his wife"
The stuff with Chunky and Hugh was pretty twisted and I was really disappointed how everything turned out with Chunky. I liked the fact that Dahlia wanted to do something good for her, too bad it didn't work out.
But what was up with Hugh rolling around on the floor, taking apart the phone? That was a bit too weird.

Good point, I haven't really thought about that anymore, but now that you mention it...

I loved tonights episode(I say tonight, but I Tivo'd it). I really love Nina. She just, I'm not sure, just awesome. I'm disappointed in Hugh though. Knew something was crazy when they started the toast. Can't wait to see next week. I was praying Dhalia didn't do the coke. I have High Hopes for her. I get a little frustrated on how she pulls flip-flops, but hopefully it'll work out in the end. The writers seem to be giving us everything we want to see.
Peace Out

Okay. I LOVED this episode.
I really liked Chunky Kay, even though she was kind of a {unfriendly word} to Dahlia by leaving the coke there. (You know and the whole murder thing, but I can understand almost. Wayne was kind of a jerk to her, more than she deserved. Nina came off as kind of stuck up huh? I feel bad for her about Jim, I wonder what will happen with them. I like how Sam was in a suit to start with. "it's just a barret" comes down in a dress, heels and everything. So that secret is out now...
Anyway, not much for Cael or Di Di but what the hell, only so much in an hour you can put in.

I agree, good episode.
I especially liked seeing Dahlia, with her family-first nature (which extended to prison; Chunky became her family there), learning that you just can't help everyone, even if you want to. That you and your family comes first.
Besides, some people just don't want to be helped, and are just using you. In the end, it was revealed that Chunky was still just a pusher and a thief, looking for the easy way out. She was trying to get Dahlia hooked back on drugs, and took Hugh's money while he was tweaking on the ground without a second thought.
I also liked seeing Hugh tweaking out. Not because I'm a bad-news spectator, but because it shows that Hugh is just human too, subject to falling off the wagon despite his lofty position and riches. Watching him cruelly cajoling Sam and Nina's husband was grueling, though necessary for the plot, because it shows just how big of a jerk he really is, why everyone fears and hates him. I think ultimately he is doing all this as a preemptive kind of strike, to keep people away from him so that they won't find out what a fake he really is. He definitely has some self-image problems.
And watching Wayne turn down the partnership was good. I know that signing Doug Rich's name would be a future problem, and that may be part of the reason why he refused to do it. But he also got a good look at a really messed up rich buffer, and maybe he doesn't want a piece of that rotten pie after all.

Matty: I wouldn't say Nina came off stuck up. She is probably one of the most (if not the most) honest characters of the show. In the end she just behaves and says what everyone thinks and she doesn't really care how people percieve her. Thats what makes her such a special character.
I agree that Sam's little play was funny, but sometimes I wonder. He should be used to playing his role to keep up the sharade, so I am a bit curious as to why he does these things. I mean he should have known that he gets Wayne and Dahlia into a bit of trouble explaining things. However Nina saved the evening by coming up with an explaination the fastest (which just proofs that she is nice and doesn't judge people).
Thor: At first I couldn't understand why Wayne was behaving the way he did towards Chunky Kay, but then I realized that he was right after all wanting her out. He probably was more sensitive towards her real nature and of course he was afraid that she would mess up the Dinner party, which she totally did. So in the end, it would have been better for him (and not as much fun for us) if he would have succeeded.
I was somewhat surprised when he let her take Hugh's money and simply replaced it afterwards instead of getting on her case. On the other hand, with her figure I am not sure you want to throw yourself into her way and it might have been better to make her happy and not hold a grudge.
I haven't really thought of the implications of Wayne signing the paperwork, but I believe he is in so deep already, that it wouldn't make any difference. He is already impersonating a Lawyer.
Although Hugh is a nasty character, I love seing him. He is defenitely the spice in the show (well one of the many spices).

You guys are right. It was definitely painful to see Hugh like this, but I agree that it was necessary and it added some more depth and realism (for lack of a better word) to his character. It definitely showed that he has some big flaws. And I think you made a good point, thor, when you said that he is doing it to keep up his on facade. It does fit into what we've learned about him so far.
And LOL, Steve: you're right, Hugh is definitely one of the "flavorful" spices in the show.

Nicely said, Steve. I adore Nina and I think the actress playing her is just perfect for this role. She definitely speaks her mind and it is something that makes her very interesting to me and unique in a sense. And I just love the way she and Dahlia deal with each other.
As to Chunky. I can understand her behavior to a certain point. What really pi**ed me off though was when she left the Coke for Dahlia. First she gives Hugh some after finding out that he used to use and then she tries to get Dahlia hooked again. Even though Dahlia told her she was trying hard to get off it. That to me is just bad character and something I could not forgive. It also didn't sit right after listening to her telling everyone how much "Dahli" means to her.
I guess you're right thor, in the end she is still just a pusher and was only looking to get something out of it.

Okay, I didn't word that well, I love Nina, I just think she kind of seemed stuck up a little bit throughout. With little things like "she's great" when Chunky Kay dropped the bottle. Maybe I'm just overthinking it. I feel sad for her, she is in a pretty bad situation
