And the producers love you for it, because you're a lot like many who watch the show every week. It's a love-hate thing, and they gotcha!
Trouble is, American Idol and some other reality shows are so popular that they spawn other shows like rabbits. I hate seeing so much quality material being pushed out by a reality-show laden schedule. The studios love these shows because they are largely unscripted (don't have to pay any writers), are on a single set with one to three cameras (saving production costs), and rely on unpaid talent (contestants) to come and bang their heads on the brick wall week after week, year after year.
Sorry, off my soapbox now.
(Yes, I sometimes watch it. I watched it this season for a while because a friend of someone I know was a contestant.)

People love to see other peoples misery. Thats the attraction of such shows. It makes them feel good about themselves.
If you see the ratings, you can see that quality entertainment is not really requested by the viewers. They rather love shallow and stupid shows that don't challenge the audience.
People don't like to be challenged when they watch TV. They don't like to think while indulging in their favorite past time activity.

Amen to that! I cannot stand any kind of reality show. I 'm having a real hard time understanding what in the world makes people watch these shows. And it's not just an American phenomenon; it's the same in Japan and a lot of the European countries.

And worst of all, it doesn't matter because people love these shows. So from a business perspective it pays off to them.
If everyone hated these shows like me, noone would be watching it.
Even worse, in order to stay "interesting" they have to come up with even more stupid stuff all the time.

I used to watch The Simpsons, the Green Screen Show, and a few Inside the Actor's Studio shows...but I guess I have to make the 5th BBC News. That's lame.
